Filmmaking Through A De-Colonized Lens
IndigiLens Productions an indigenous owned and operated independent film company based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Founded in 2023, IndigiLens Productions was created on the principal that filmmaking is a natural progression from oral storytelling, a practice that allowed many indigenous communities to thrive for thousands of generations all across the globe. IndigiLens Productions is committed to developing and extending a platform for marginalized communities to take control of their own narratives to show the world accurate representation of indigenous peoples in media.
IndigiLens Productions is proud to
announce our first film:
An Untitled Documentary featuring Diné scholar and weaver Venancio Aragon.
SYNOPSIS:
Venancio Aragon is a Diné scholar and artisan. But his education started many generations ago, through his ancestral knowledge. Diné weaving serves as a repository of cultural and ecological knowledge. Weavers have been a source of ethnographic data used for the preservation of the heritage. Revival movements are underway to preserve and document various techniques and knowledge relating to the Diné weaving tradition. Weavers themselves usually lack a voice and their stories are quietly overlooked by academic and colonial institutions. Rather than focusing on the textiles, other sources of knowledge can be learned by highlighting Diné weavers themselves. Venancio will be sharing how the intergenerational transmission of knowledge in Diné communities preserved a vibrant culture and how his tapestries are not only woven with wool, but with the fibers of the heart Diné culture.
